Détails de la formation

Etablissement: Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines
Discipline: Lettre et Sciences Humaines
Niveau: BAC+5
Diplôme: Master Fondamental
Objectif de la formation: Our MA in Linguistics and Applies Language Studies designed for people who want to know more about how foreign or second languages (particularly English) are learned, and how different kinds of classroom practice might affect proficiency. Students will learn about different approaches to understanding language and language acquisition, and will be taught the methods that can be used to investigate language learning and teaching.
The MA Program in Applied Linguistics and Educational Technology is comprehensive in its scope and designed to introduce students to the theoretical, empirical and practical dimensions of applied linguistics and the use of technology in teaching English. The Program emphasizes both theory and practice.
Its interdisciplinary core curriculum includes courses in:
• Basic theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics
• Psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics
• Discourse analysis and research methods
• ESL/EFL methodologies
• Educational technologies and e-learning
The program is thus designed to enable students to understand the diversity of issues inherent in the study of language and TEFL so they are well prepared to teach and do research in applied linguistics. Students pursuing the MA in Linguistics and Applies Language Studies have a wide range of opportunities, including conducting research, working with community-based organizations, or preparing to teach in various contexts, such as public or private schools and language. Students can also go on to pursue doctoral work in such fields as linguistics, education, and literacy studies. Prospective students need not have teaching experience to be considered for acceptance into the program.
The program operates on a cohort model whereby all participants complete the same program of study over a two-year period.

Developing Researcher Competence

In recent years, there have been a number of changes in Moroccan language planning and policy whereby more focus has been granted to languages (Standard Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, Amazigh, and foreign languages especially French and English. In particular, the explicit research element has increased and become obligatory. It is within this framework that all the course units on this MA program « Linguistics and Applies Language Studies » involve a research element of one sort of another. The main is to improve students research competence. This Developing Research Competence is a main goal of all subjects of the Master program where this explicit research requirement is most obviously located. The title – Developing Research Competence – intentionally focuses on the researcher and their developing competence rather as well as focusing on research methodologies and training in them.

DRC is a compulsory course objective in all modules for students in this Linguistics and Applies Language Studies MA programme. It is usually taken towards the latter part of the taught component of these programmes, just prior to the Dissertation for which it is preparatory – the self-generated topic that participants explore in it is usually closely linked to their Dissertation topic.

Aims —
The modules of this MA are conceptually divided into two components. The first is concerned with developing the participants’ researcher competence through the planning, designing, implementing and writing-up of a small-scale study (usually linked by topic to their Dissertation) and to link this endeavour to critical reflection on how the experience of this study contributes to their developing research competence. The course aims to:

- Provide a conceptual understanding of the principles and practice of Linguistics and Applies Language Studies and education-related research and to foster an awareness of a variety of research approaches, methods, and techniques;
-Explore the uses of technology in education and education-related research;
-(mainly in relation to Applied Linguistics axe of this MA) to explore how research may be undertaken into the various modules of this MA;
-Encourage critical reflection on the process of planning, designing, implementing, and writing-up Applied Linguistics and education-related research; and
-Encourage critical reflection on the process through which the researcher develops their competence in education and/or education-related research.
The second component is concerned with deepening participants’ knowledge and understanding of the methods and methodologies of data collection and data analysis. To this end, they will study modules related to this. As incorporated into these courses, the aims of this component of the course are to:

-Introduce the principles and practice associated with one or more research approaches, methods, and techniques;
-Introduce the principles and practice associated with one or more areas of data analysis; and
-Reflect critically on the appropriacy of particular approaches, methods, and techniques for specific research activities.

This MA is the outcome of a new vision of university studies in Morocco and of new criteria of learning and evaluation that are concomitant with the spirit of the Reform. It proposes job-oriented as well as research prospects modules functioning as a ‘passerelle’ opening up on the job market.
This MA in Linguistics and Applies Language Studies is designed to enable students to understand the relevance of work in linguistics to social and political issues, and to professions such as teaching English as a first or second/foreign language or teaching foreign languages. It is a degree of practical research scope devoted to the theory and practice of language teaching.

The program has a particular appeal to students wishing to become teachers / language teachers with some experience who are seeking a further qualification. It is also especially suitable for in-service teachers with responsibility for language matters, and for language graduates who wish to set their studies in the context of modern research on applied linguistics,

In this MA program, the trainees, who are often involved professionally with language or languages, become familiar with concepts and practical techniques from general and applied linguistics, undertake coursework and assessments related to their individual concerns, and achieve intellectual self-development and a further professional qualification. Trainees will be practically prepared to teach English. It will equip them with an understanding of the structure of English and the most effective techniques for teaching learners. Trainees completing this program will have a good understanding of linguistic theory as well as the practical techniques that allow for the most effective presentation of English language instruction. They will be able to conduct academic research to help boost English Language Teaching and Learning in Moroccan schools and universities.

Furthermore, technology is becoming increasingly important in both our personal and professional lives, and our learners are using technology more and more. Yet teacher training programs often ignore training in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and teachers are often far less skilled and knowledgeable than their own students when it comes to using current technology tools, and by showing how teachers can use these new tools in the classroom. They will also be introduced to research about this new evolving area of education that is booming now. As such it is both about the practical application of technology to teaching English and languages in general and researching this very promising field.

It is worth to mention too that this MA program has been developed relying of major similar programs provided by famous international universities like CELTA, Iowa State University and the University of Manchester..

It sets for itself the following objectives:

1- To help bridge the gap between the department of English in general and the faculty of Letters and Human Sciences in general and the socio-economic environment.

2- To realize the university reform objective concerning creating job-oriented modules and professional B.As functioning as a ‘passerelle’ opening up on the job market

3- To develop trainees’ fluency and accuracy in using the English language for personal and professional purposes.

4- To improve their knowledge in the foundations of linguistics, including phonology, syntax, discourse and pragmatics.

5- To acquaint them with the main theories of learning, teaching, and second language acquisition.

6- To provide them with the practical skills, strategies, and knowledge for designing courses, planning lessons, and delivering material to learners employing a wide range of pedagogical techniques.

7- To enable them to connect theory with practice by providing experiences in authentic classroom settings.

8- To raise their awareness of research in applied linguistics/TEFL and EdTech

9- To equip them with up-to-date ICT skills in teaching English.

To attain these objectives, this master program proposes mostly practical research and job-oriented modules leading up to the job market or to PhD degrees in the field.
This Master program also comes to satisfy a requirement of the Ministry of Education from University to create programs to train students to become teachers in public high schools.
